We, the undersigned alumni, are writing to express our solidarity with Emory University students who are being harassed, doxxed and otherwise targeted due to their peaceful protests in support of the rights of Palestinian people. We also wish to express our profound disappointment in Emory University President Gregory Fenves and the Emory administration for their response to the community via the email sent out on Oct. 25, 2023, as well as our frustration at the administration’s disregard for student safety.
Background
On Oct. 25, current Emory students organized a walkout to peacefully protest the construction of the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, commonly known as “Cop City.” In recognition of the links between police brutality in the U.S. and the ongoing war crimes and human rights violations taking place in Gaza, the West Bank and the Occupied Territories, the protestors included demands for the University to support Palestinian students and condemn doxxing by donors and alumni. In response, President Fenves sent out an email to the Emory community denouncing this protest for the participants’ alleged use of “antisemitic phrases and slogans.” The email did not clarify which phrases and slogans were antisemitic or any basis for such claims, nor did it provide adequate context for the protest itself. This lack of neutrality and clarity not only delegitimized the protest, but also actively put the safety of student protestors at risk.
President Fenves’ email was widely shared without any mention of an investigation into the validity of the claims made. Students were also not given the opportunity to share their experiences of and reactions to the protest before the President’s public statement. President Fenves admitted in his statement that the protest was protected under Emory’s Open Expression Policy, which upholds students’ First Amendment freedoms of speech and assembly. However, in the same statement, he called the actions of the protestors “divisive,” “hateful” and “reprehensible.” It is concerning that the President would choose these words without an investigation or evidence to back up such strong claims. His statement effectively silenced student voices by conflating protests against Israel’s actions with antisemitism. It also further endangered already vulnerable students, especially those with significantly marginalized identities. Many of these students were already being harassed, doxxed and threatened prior to his public statement.
In a previous University-wide email on Oct. 11, President Fenves spoke of how “the reality of Jews being senselessly murdered and taken as hostages will not soon leave [his] mind, and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.” It is revealing of Fenves’s biases that the same president who had so recently and swiftly condemned senseless murder was not only silent in his Oct. 25 statement on the well-documented murder of thousands of Palestinian civilians, but went so far as to reduce a peaceful student protest to “antisemitism targeting Jewish members of our community” without evidence of either antisemitism or targeting. This statement is a gross mischaracterization of the protest.
Our Position
Fenves’s decision to selectively address civilian deaths is divisive. The University’s inaction and silence on the continued harassment and doxxing of students by alumni, donors, parents, fellow students and others is reprehensible. We strongly believe that condemning antisemitism and other forms of bigotry when they arise is critical and will always play an important role in fostering inclusivity and protecting members of the Emory community. However, advocating for a “Free Palestine” is not antisemitic, as noted by Emory faculty who cited credible academic sources in their open letter to the community and President Fenves. Broad allegations of antisemitism should not be used as a tool to silence student protests against the well-documented atrocities occurring in Palestine.
We echo the message of the Jewish-led advocacy organization Jewish Voice for Peace, which has stated that, “Criticism of Zionism is not to be conflated with antisemitism. States such as Israel and the United States are openly criticized in public life, and their political beliefs and policies are subject to critical debate, in accord with our basic First Amendment rights. Anti-Zionism is not synonymous with antisemitism.”
The Emory student protestors highlighted this in their response to President Fenves, in which they wrote, “’From the river to the Sea, Palestine will be free,’ is not a statement calling for the exclusion of the Jewish people, but rather a call for solidarity, acknowledgment and freedom from the chains of colonial oppression that bind all.”
As Emory alumni, we stand with the Palestinian, Muslim, Jewish, Black, Arab and countless other Emory students who have been subjected to harassment and intimidation within our community for their ethnicity, faith and support of the Palestinian people. We are appalled and deeply concerned by the University’s silence towards the public doxxing campaigns targeting these students and find such inaction to be in direct conflict with President Fenves’s plea for mutual respect in moments of disagreement. This silence, coupled with the administration’s broad condemnation of these student protesters as antisemitic, is likely to increase the doxxing campaign’s efforts and further exacerbate the harm experienced by students through this misrepresentation of their beliefs. The University has a duty to protect the safety and well-being of all its students, especially at a time when we are seeing an increase in violence committed against students for their race and faith across the country. We believe the administration’s continued pattern of institutional apathy and selective compliance with this duty constitutes gross negligence towards the safety of Emory students. In order to remedy the current and potentially long-term harm caused by the perpetrators of doxxing campaigns and the silent Emory administration, the University must take action now.
We call on Emory’s administration to immediately:
- Name, condemn and reject anti-Palestinian racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism and racial profiling on campus and beyond;
- Protect its students against any threats to their safety, as well as actively work to combat doxxing;
- Issue a written apology for their lack of support of peaceful student protestors and other students made vulnerable to doxxing and harassment; and
- Pledge that Deans provide resources, including writing letters of recommendation, for all students targeted by smear campaigns that may impact their professional and academic futures.
As Emory Alumni, we also call upon Joshua R. Newton, the Senior Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Engagement, to provide a phone number for Emory alumni to contact him and ask him to directly engage with concerned alumni. We are incredibly dissatisfied and disappointed that Joshua Newton, while leading the alumni engagement team, offers no opportunity for alumni to directly speak with him. An effective steward for alumni engagement should have open lines of communication to address concerns and cultivate relationships. Joshua Newton, we ask you to remedy this issue immediately as we consist of current and potential future Emory donors and supporters.
