The Emory Wheel garnered seven awards from the 2020 Georgia College Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest on Feb. 19.
Arts & Entertainment Editor Stephen Altobelli (22C) and contributing writer Elizabeth Greene (19Ox, 21C) won first place for “Best Review” in Group I for their piece “‘Art’ with a Price Tag: Virgil Abloh’s Exhibit at the High Museum.” The article discusses a new exhibit at the High Museum of Art, which they praise for its diversity, but criticize Abloh’s commercialization.
The judges noted that Altobelli and Greene’s article was “well-written” and appreciated that “it was about something the students could actually attend within the state.”
Group I is for freshman and sophomore writers while Group II is for junior and senior writers.
In Group II, Editor-in-Chief Madison Bober (20C) and Sports Editor Jessica Solomon (23C) finished in second place for “Best News Article - Investigative Reporting” for “38 Cross Country/Track & Field Members Leave Team Amid Culture Shift,” which examines the motivations behind athletes’ mass departure from Emory’s cross country and track & field team.
Editorial Board member Sara Khan (23C) took home second place for “Best Entertainment Story” in Group I for her reflection on the cancellation of the “Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj.” Her piece, “Groundbreaking ‘Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj’ Will Be Dearly Missed,” is an ode to Minhaj and his Netflix show, a political satire that often included references to his South Asian identity.
Also in Group I, Staff Writer Claire Fenton (24C) won second place for “Best Feature Story” for “Off-Campus First Years Struggle to Find Place at Emory,” which details the lacking sense of belonging that many off-campus first-year students faced in the fall.
