A full obituary will be posted later as we collect stories from family and friends.
First-year Oxford student Yide “Dave” Zhang died unexpectedly on March 5, according to a March 6 email sent to Oxford College students by Oxford Dean Douglas Hicks.
Zhang studied from his home in Suzhou, China during the fall semester but came to Oxford in the spring. Hicks wrote that the University will announce a memorial tribute in accordance with current gathering policies at a later time.
Students who would like support during this time can attend two “group sessions” at the Oxford Student Center today: the first at 1 p.m. and the second at 2 p.m. The Director of Counseling Services Gary Glass and Oxford College Chaplain Lyn Pace will lead the session.
“Together as the Oxford community, let us also support one another, especially those in our community who were close to Dave,” Hicks wrote.
Counseling and support services are available to the Emory community, Hicks noted. Students may reach Counseling and Career Services, which can help students navigate tragedies, by calling (770) 784-8394. Students can also find support at the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life located in Room 224 of the Oxford Student Center or can contact the chaplain at (770) 784-8392.

Wtf is this article. This isn’t some kinda of gossip, this is someone’s life. So disrespectful for emory wheel.
Dave was my classmate in China, and I want to know how this happened.
Could you please update on this news? Thank you.
John 我觉得他们不会更新这个了,诶。
Dave was my friend. l want to know what happened. Could you update this news?
OMG Please be respectful to the student who passed away. only two sentences for the student. And why do you use quotation mark on his first name. Sigh…
This article is so insensitive. Imagine if it was your friend. I recommend the wheel take this down.
I want to know what happened to Dave.
what happened?plz tell us more
Really upset to see this kind of brash writing. There is a better way to write about students passing away. This is really disrespectfully written and ridiculously impersonal
Please report what happened!
plz tell us what happened! we all worry about!
Dave was my classmate and friend in China,I want to konw more about what happened.
Report what happened! Look up the rest of the articles describing Emory students’ deaths ” Two Students Killed in Bangladesh”, “Emory Student Dies in Pool”, “Emory Student Hit by Car” How come this is “Emory Student Dies” without an explanation? What are you covering up? This is a student, a friend, a son. Do not disrespect a life especially one that was lost. The blame is not on this writer but rather on Emory. Shame on you for allowing life to pass away and then not tell the rest of the student body about it. Students deserve to know. We don’t want your BS Emory forward emails, give us information regarding a fellow Emory student. Shame, shame, shame on all of you for letting this happen and then hiding the story from other students.
我想知道到底发生了什么?一个好人怎么死得这么突然?
That’s over? Any updates? Where’s the cops?
This is highly insensitive and takes no regard for a human being, not accounting for the fact that it’s a first-year Emory student. Shame on Isaiah for this poor writing and irresponsibly not taking action as multiple people have already commented. The Emory community deserves to know what happened.
May he Rest In Peace 🙏🏽
Dears,
I am just a visitor of this page, after read the news in another Chinese web page.
Please don’t blame Emory!
Please don’t blame the editor!
Please don’t blame the messenger!
There must be a reason no details available or not yet being published!
I saw another announcement from his father asking for privacy.
By claiming friend or school mate or class mate does’t give you the right demanding for information!
Be patient, and be decent!
May Dave RIP!
While I understand it is the reporters duty to report facts without emotional attachments but for news like this please show a little empathy and not just quote what hicks said. Thank you and rest in peace Dave
发生了什么??
While I understand it is the reporters duty to report facts without emotional attachments but for news like this please show a little empathy and not just quote what hicks said. Thank you and rest in peace Dave
I am a visitor of this page, and a father of two college students.
Please don’t blame anyone! Be patient! May Yide Zhang RIP.
i have been waiting for the “a full obituary” and was so disappointed with nothing updated for so long. Emory and its editorial, and also its faculty is to be blamed for sure. how come a young life passed away so ‘unexpectedly” and no empathy ,sorrow, regret could be seen here . is this discrimination or prejudice? is such an insensitive community and campus worth his stay? i would rather believe that he left here without any regret and RIP.
How come i can not post my words blaming this insensitive Emory and its editorial?
为什么一直没有发出a full obituary? 我们一直在等。
Where is the full obituary? It’s been more than two weeks. Where are the comments from friends and loved ones? Some details about who he was as a person? How he died, how his family is, what we can do? Dave was a person, a person who went to the same school as us. You don’t have to say what happened if his family wants privacy but please have some tact…
I am a parent Is there a memorial site where people can leave messages to memorize Dave, send condolences, and comfort his family? It will help the family and the loved ones to get through this difficult time.
Thank you. you make me warm. It’s so cold here. Freezing.
Two weeks passed and still no full obituary. What takes you so long? There have also been guesses that Dave’s death is related to the rising Asian hate crimes and violence on US campuses. If that is not the case, Emory should make timely explanations to clarify people’s doubts, instead of hiding its head in the sand and pretending nothing was ever wrong. We Asian students deserve to know what REALLY happened.
We are still waiting for a full obituary!
A life just passed and nothing left?even not a sigh, no regret, no sorrow, no regret? Where are his fellow classmates? teachers? tutors? Cannot believe. Nothing could explain this. Even if his family wants privacy, it’s not the reason of this total silence. Dead silence. Dave is not just a child of his family, he is one of the Emory students, and an independent person, a member of us human. So, pls don’t be so cold and apathetic. Emory, you owe him,Dave, who was ever a member of yours, a full obituary !
“A full obituary will be posted later as we collect stories from family and friends. ” This is what you said on March 6, and now is April 25. A month and a half has passed, this is what you so-called “later”. The ignorance and darkness are killing me. I understand it is necessary to respect Dave’s privacy and his family’s suggestions, but it is not the reason for this terrifying silence of this web page and the Emory wheel. Please show us the duty that a competent university press has, and give us reasonable feedback instead of a “Letters to our readers” announcement which actually says nothing but muddles through a task. I believe that anyone who cares about Dave but who doesn’t know the truth is waiting for a complete, reasonable, understandable obituary. We
are waiting all the time, though it was painful.
Where is the full obituary???
