Emory University’s undergraduate tuition will increase 4.9% for the 2023-24 academic year, rising from $57,120 to $59,920, according to a March 2 Emory News Center article. In total, the cost of undergraduate tuition, fees, room and board will grow from $74,964 to $79,054 — a 5.5% increase.

The Emory Board of Trustees approved the tuition increase following recommendations from University President Gregory Fenves.

“Tuition is an important resource that helps the University meet our goal of providing students with world-class educational experiences and opportunities,” Assistant Vice President of University Communications and Marketing Laura Diamond wrote in an email to the Wheel. “Tuition strengthens our academic excellence across all aspects of the University.”

The 4.9% increase follows Emory replacing undergraduate students’ need-based loans with institutional grants and scholarships, which started in fall 2022 semester as part of the expanded Emory Advantage program. Emory Advantage is assisting nearly 3,100 undergraduates this academic year, which is a 143% increase when compared to the 2021-22 academic year, according to the article.

Emory’s 2023-24 tuition increase is larger than in recent years. Last year, Emory announced a 4.5% tuition increase for the 2022-23 academic year and a 3% tuition increase for the 2021-22 academic year. The University planned to increase tuition for the 2020-21 academic year by 4%, but the Board of Trustees voted to “freeze” tuition and canceled the price markup due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peer institutions have similarly announced tuition raises, with Duke University (N.C.) increasing undergraduate tuition by 4.9% and Washington University in St. Louis increasing by 3.9%. Additionally, tuition increased at Stanford University (Calif.), Brown University (R.I.), Georgetown University (D.C.) and Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) by 7%, 4.75%, 4.9% and 4%, respectively.
