NLE Choppa to headline Homecoming concert, student performers to open

NLE Choppa, a rapper known for “SLUT ME OUT” and “Shotta Flow,” will headline this year’s Homecoming concert on Oct. 19. The concert will take place on McDonough Field and doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Student Programming Council (SPC) announced the lineup to Emory University students in an Instagram post today.

SPC Presidents Howie Brown (26C) and Sophia Callender (25B) wrote in an email to The Emory Wheel that they are “super thrilled” to have NLE Choppa perform this year.

In addition to NLE Choppa, the concert will feature student performers as the opening acts for the first time, according to Brown and Callender.

The featured students include Noa Weinhaus (27B), who will do a circus performance act, boy band Run the Row, dance group TNT, dance group Vibez, vocalist Sophia Kim (23Ox, 25C), vocalist Maiya and DJ Rish.

“As we’ve done in years past we will have a student DJ, but we will also be highlighting the talents of various dance groups, bands, vocalists and circus acts before NLE goes on stage!” Brown and Callender wrote.

The presidents expressed gratitude to SPC Band Party Chairs Liesl Scherrer (25B) and Meliyah Salvage-Edwards (25B) for their help, writing that “their hard work and creativity” will make the concert “the best experience possible for Emory students.”

Like the past two concerts, the Student Involvement, Leadership and Transitions office decided not to offer guest passes to this year’s show to promote “safety and security.”

This is the sixth consecutive Homecoming concert featuring a rapper as the headlining act. Previous homecoming performers included Fivio Foreign in 2023, Swae Lee in 2022, Jack Harlow in 2021, Rico Nasty in 2019 and Waka Flocka Flame in 2018. There was no Homecoming Concert in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

NLE Choppa, whose birth name is Bryson Lashun Potts, currently has over 19 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

When NLE Choppa was 16, he recorded his single “Shotta Flow” featuring Blueface, which reached No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was later certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. His first studio album, “Top Shotta,” debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 in August 2020. Last year, NLE Choppa released his second studio album “Cottonwood 2,” which peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard 200.

“SLUT ME OUT” is NLE Choppa’s top charting song on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 28 in April 2023. He released his most recent song “Gang Baby” on Sept. 27 and has garnered over 1.7 million streams on Spotify.

Brown and Callender wrote that they look forward to this year’s performance.

“We anticipate this concert to highlight a diverse range of songs and talents, all closing with NLE on stage with high energy!” Brown and Callender wrote.
