EPD arrests suspect in Emory Point shooting

The Emory University Police Department (EPD) arrested 59-year-old Daniel Clark for firing a gun during a dispute with his coworker at Emory Point yesterday morning. Officers charged Clark with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, possession of a weapon in a school safety zone and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, Vice President of University Communications Laura Diamond wrote in an email to The Emory Wheel.

“Emory Police Chief Burt Buchtinec thanks community members for their quick reaction in alerting the department yesterday,” Diamond wrote.

The University alerted Emory community members of a “police emergency” at Emory Point yesterday morning around 8:21 a.m. Shortly before this, Clark — who works for an Emory-affiliated service company — allegedly got into an altercation with a coworker and grabbed a gun from his car. He returned to the kitchen and shot at his coworker but missed. Clark brandished the gun at another coworker before leaving the scene in a 2021 silver Chevrolet Malibu. Nobody was injured during the incident.

In an email to the Emory community yesterday afternoon, Buchtinec acknowledged that the altercation was likely “upsetting and stressful.”

“Please know Emory has a variety of resources to support you,” Buchtinec wrote in the email. “The Emory Police Department takes pride in serving this community and we will continue our efforts to keep everyone safe and secure.”
