Dear President Fenves,
We, the undersigned faculty and staff of Emory University, condemn the violent attacks and the subsequent war in Israel and Gaza, and grieve the devastation faced by innocent Israeli and Palestinian civilians. We mourn and lament the recent violence, which has affected our community in both scholarly and personal ways. Violence, particularly against unarmed civilians, can never be excused. We call on our community to come together, condemn the loss of life, renew calls for negotiation and urge that all parties respect the international laws of war and basic human rights. We stand in solidarity with our Jewish and Arab colleagues, students and communities. We commit ourselves to being a resource for open conversation and support for our grieving communities, particularly all of our students whose lives and families are being directly impacted by the latest events. We commit ourselves to candid and respectful discourse and the vital importance of discussing difficult topics in an environment free from recriminations, fear and hate.
